The Onboarding Journey

Even though we want to make Healthy Living for Desk Dwellers a cozy and welcoming community, we are also not completely going to avoid modern tactics.

There has to be a compelling reason to join the community.

A good onboarding journey is still very important.

Behold, our thought process:

First, we have to figure out who a typical desk dweller is. In a way, this is simple: a desk dweller is someone who works an office job. That makes it a huge group of people. What will make the group smaller is that our community will focus on healthy living. So you'll have to be a desk dweller AND you have to be interested in healthy living.

Is that enough reason to join?

Perhaps? Maybe because you know us and want to support us. And maybe because you genuinely are a desk dweller that is interested in healthy living. But for most people, we think they want something more.

Personally, when we join a new (online) community, we want to learn something new.

That's why we are currently thinking of giving every new member a free mini-course with tips on healthy living to get them started. We don't know exactly know yet how the course will be distributed (e-mail? The forum?), but we do think it's important to share information and actionable tips about what healthy living for desk dwellers means.

The free mini-course

The course has yet to be made, but a first brainstorm yielded these topics:

  • what is health anyway?
  • the three pillars of health (sleep/rest, nutrition & exercise/sport)
  • what are typical desk dwellers health concerns?
  • stretching and its benefits
  • crafting a long term plan to improve your desk dweller lifestyle

The goal of the course is to give you a general idea about health and its subtopics (the three pillars), to know the risks of a sedentary desk dweller lifestyle, and to craft a long term plan to work on your health.

After the course, you should be on-boarded in the sense that you know what the community is about. You then have enough information to decide whether your health is something you want to put time and effort in right now.

If the answer is yes: you can use the forum and all free resources to help you move forward. We will encourage you to share whatever you are learning about yourself on this journey on the forum. The community will be better when we all help each other.

This is our thought process about the onboarding journey so far.

What are your thoughts? What are you looking for when you join a new (online) community?
